Just get 7-zip. It’s free, and opens most kinds of archives (including tars, rars, zips and its own 7z format).

Well it’s basically free. All you have to do is click canel when it tells you to buy the full version. Lol. It’s so stupid.
WinRAR is not free ;P But it’s awesome! (oh and it’s trial never ends so practically it IS free XD)
You could just simply restore your iPod touch via DFU mode.

I have a PC too and I can open those types of files. Download a free application called WinRAR give it a google search!

Well, you now have complete control of the iPhone. The hardware is yours to mess with if you are a developer.
other than running linux for the sake of running linux on a iphone. what can you do with it?
If youare getting an iPod touch 1G then go ahead but if it’s an iPid touch 2G good luck trying this without full read/write. Access to the OS.

he didn’t. He used a USB console on his Mac. He had it hooked up via USB cable and then he opened a shell on his Mac and run it, and it showed up on his iPhone. It’s quite complex, but it works.
